Sony Projector Repair
Restoring the brilliance of SXRD and Laser projection. We provide specialist care for Sony's VPL Home Cinema and Professional Installation ranges, ensuring your premium equipment performs as intended.
Models We Support
We service the complete Sony line-up, from legacy HD to native 4K Laser.
Native 4K Cinema
Sony's VPL-VW series are renowned for their native 4K panels. However, the delicate wire-grid polarizers are susceptible to humidity damage.
- • VW-Series: VW270ES, VW590ES
- • XW-Series: XW5000ES (Laser)
- • Legacy: VPL-VW95ES, VW500ES
Full HD (HW Series)
The HW series remains a 1080p benchmark. Common issues include ballast failure (lamp not striking) and mechanical iris grinding noises.
- • HW-Series: HW40ES, HW45ES
- • HW65ES: Advanced Iris Repair
- • Maintenance: Deep Optical Cleaning
Pro & Simulation
High-brightness installation and simulation units. We handle complex liquid cooling systems and dual-lamp stack configurations.
- • FH-Series: FHZ55, FHZ60 (Laser)
- • GTZ-Series: VPL-GTZ380 (Sim)
- • VZ-Series: VPL-VZ1000ES (UST)
Common Sony SXRD Failures
Sony projectors use proprietary SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) technology. This delivers incredible contrast and deep blacks but introduces specific failure modes over time, particularly related to the optical block and cooling systems.
Unlike DLP chips which are sealed, SXRD panels are organic. High humidity environments can cause the liquid crystal layer to degrade or the wire-grid polarizers to oxidize. This is often misdiagnosed as a bad lamp, but requires specialist optical refurbishment.
Contrast Loss / Blue Haze
Also known as "Gamma Drift". The image looks washed out, blacks appear blue or grey. We refurbish the optical block to restore native contrast ratios.
Iris Grinding Noise
The "Advanced Iris" improves dynamic contrast but uses plastic gears which can strip or seize, causing a loud noise on startup. We replace the iris mechanism.
Won't Power On (2/3 Blinks)
Often caused by a failed ballast (lamp driver) or a seized "squirrel cage" fan deep inside the unit. We perform component-level board repairs.
Sony Status Light Decoder
*Consult your VPL manual. Blink patterns can be specific to models.
Is it Worth Repairing?
Sony 4K projectors hold their value exceptionally well. Here is the economic case for repair.
The Cost of Replacement
A new native 4K Sony projector (like the XW5000) costs upwards of £5,000. Cheaper 4K DLP projectors often lack the black levels, lens shift, and motion handling of your existing Sony VPL unit.
The Cost of Repair
Our typical optical block refurbishment or mainboard repair costs between £250 - £450. This extends the life of your premium asset for a fraction of the replacement price.
Sony Specific FAQ
Can you fix the blue haze on my VPL-VW?
Yes. This degradation of the SXRD optical block is common. We can often refurbish the block by replacing the specific wire-grid polarizers that have failed, which is much cheaper than buying a full replacement optical engine.
Do you use genuine Sony lamps?
We recommend and supply genuine Philips/Ushio bulbs (the OEM manufacturers for Sony). These provide the correct brightness and colour temperature. We advise against cheap generic "compatible" lamps as they can damage the ballast.
Is my laser projector serviceable?
Yes. While the laser light source is sealed, the rest of the unit (fans, mainboard, phosphor wheel) is serviceable. Laser units often require deep cleaning of the cooling system to maintain brightness.
