Common BenQ Failures
BenQ projectors use DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology. While extremely sharp and high-contrast, they rely on moving mechanical parts—specifically cooling fans and colour wheels—which are prone to wear over time.
The "Death Rattle"
A loud buzzing or high-pitched screeching noise. This is the Colour Wheel bearing failing. If ignored, the glass wheel will shatter, filling the optical engine with debris.
White/Black Dots
The "Starry Night" effect. This indicates the DMD Chip has overheated and the micro-mirrors are stuck. We replace the chip and upgrade the thermal pads.
Overheating Shutdown
BenQ units have strict fan speed sensors. If a fan slows down due to dust, the unit shuts off to protect the lamp. We replace fans with OEM MagLev units.
BenQ Error Code Matrix
*LED patterns vary by model. Consult your W-series or TK-series manual for specific blink counts.
BenQ Specific FAQ
My W1070 turns on, fans spin, then red light. Why?
This is the most common BenQ fault. It usually means one of the 3 internal fans (usually the small blower fan cooling the lamp) has seized or is spinning too slowly. The motherboard detects the low RPM and cuts power.
Can you fix the rainbow effect?
If the "rainbow effect" has suddenly become worse or is accompanied by flickering, it indicates the colour wheel index sensor is dirty or the wheel motor is fluctuating in speed. Cleaning and recalibration fixes this.
Is it worth repairing a 1080p BenQ?
Absolutely. The W1070/W2000 series are legendary for their picture quality. A repair typically costs £140-£180, whereas a comparable new 4K projector costs £1,200+. It is very economical to keep these running.
